Expect Results!!!
The results from communicating and teaching our dog correctly will be there if we are in the right frame of mind and we have the right mind set. Our attitude has to be - the dog will respond. It's up to us to make it happen. Again, the less we say the better the results. Actions speak louder than words.
We need a dog to respond no matter what. As long as he is in no physical danger there is no reason he can't. A dog will respond rather quickly one-on-one in quiet surroundings. The test is, will he respond around distractions. This is where a little imagination comes in. We need to come up with all kinds of distractions to test him. And, you will be amazed what distracts him. Again, there is no gray area with a dog. He must respond no matter what. He must know what you expect and you must have the confidence he will behave.
There is a myth that once a dog is trained that's it. Wrong. A dog learns through consistent repetition and reinforcement. What we teach a dog has to be reinforced throughout his life or he will become complacent. Even the highly trained police dogs and drug sensing dogs have to be worked to reinforce what they have been taught and keep them alert. Those dogs are depended upon to perform. So should ours.
